Having secured sustainable core funding from both the Assembly and Cardiff Council we are looking for additional Executive Committee members to join us for our next challenge which is the implementation of our strategic plan.

    Employer Profile

Cardiff Gypsy and Traveller Project is a small charitable voluntary organisation set up in 1981 following discussions between Gypsies and Travellers, Councillors and voluntary organisations in Cardiff. These identified the need for a Liaison Officer (LO) to act as a link between the Gypsy and Traveller community, the Local Authorities and the wider community.

Core funding has been provided by the Local Authority from the onset and over the years major additional funding has been attracted for specific projects.

A process of organisational review took place in 2008 and 2009 resulting in the present structure.

    AIMS

Cardiff Gypsy and Traveller Project aims to support and enable Gypsies and Travellers to achieve a high and sustainable quality of life, within their own culture, through improving access to suitable accommodation, public services and employment skills.

    THE WORK OF THE PROJECT

CGTP meets its aims by the provision of an extensive information, advice and liaison service to the Gypsy and Traveller community in Cardiff, to the Local Authority and all relevant agencies and professionals.

Main areas of work are liaison on issues of development, management and maintenance of Sites; homelessness; welfare benefits, reviews and appeals; education, health, social and housing services; and racial discrimination.

In the past CGTP has run specific issue-based projects, e.g. there have been grants to fund a worker for Roadside families, workers for Children’s Services, a Community Development Project and an Employment Training Programme. Currently we have a Youth Development Project and we run a weekly IT based Driving Theory Session.

A Gypsy and Traveller Service Providers’ Network is run by CGTP for all people in Cardiff working with Gypsies and Travellers. This meets quarterly.

An essential commitment of CGTP is to work in such a way as to enable Gypsies and Travellers to be involved, so that they can participate in defining their own needs and concerns, and help develop policies and practices to meet them. To this end the Project organises consultations when necessary and bases its work priorities on an issue-based monitoring system.
